This article will provide instructions on how to password protect any directory on your server using the cPanel interface. Please note the following from cPanel about password protected directories:
Password protection allows you to require a username and password to access a folder within your site from the web. When password protecting a folder, there are a few things to remember.
Protecting a folder will protect all folders within that folder. Also, you will need to create users who can access the protected directory. You can give the password protected directory any name, no matter what the actual directory is called.
The following steps will guide you in this process:
**All pictures are for reference only. The actual layout of your interface may differ from the images below**
**You will need to change all references of yourdomain.co.uk to your main cPanel domain.**
You can log in to your cPanel interface atyourdomain.co.uk/cpanel
**If you experience any difficulties accessing your cPanel, please contact our technical support team. They would be happy to help you obtain your login details or any other login issues.**
If you see the folder that you wish to protect listed then you will want to select the option button next to the folder you wish to protect. ** Please note that if you want to password protect a directory for an addon domain or a subdomain, you will need to choose the domain from the drop-down list.** Once you have made your decision, please click the Go button.
**If you cannot find it there, please go back to the home screen of cPanel and click on Password Protect Directories again and choose the proper directory.**
Please check the Password protect this directory box and then give it a name. Once you have given it a name, please click Save.
**As this will not rename the directory it can be named anything, it needs to be named to enable password protection on the directory.**
Once you have done this, please click Add/modify authorized user.
Once you see this screen, please click Go back to return to the cPanel account.
Congratulations! You have now successfully password protected a directory on your account. You can repeat this process for any directory you wish to protect.
